It was a scene straight out of a cop thriller, but this high-speed chase through Sandy Springs was all too real. On Tuesday, a wanted man, now identified as Brian Atsu, led the police on a harrowing pursuit that ended with spike strips, a precision immobilization technique maneuver, and a foot chase through the suburb's streets. Atsu was a fugitive with outstanding warrants for narcotic violations in Forsyth County and Dawson County.
Earlier that day, Atsu evaded two traffic stops—one in Alpharetta, and another in Sandy Springs—as reported by WSBTV. While fleeing from the police, he was driving a black BMW X6, triggering a FLOCK camera notification in Alpharetta. The subsequent investigation led detectives to the Morgan Falls Road area, where Atsu's vehicle was located near Harbor Pointe Apartments.
The pursuit escalated quickly as Atsu chose to run once again rather than surrender. With three of Atsu's car tires punctured by spike strips, Sandy Springs police had to perform a PIT maneuver on Dalrymple Road to bring the BMW to a halt, a maneuver that sent his car careening off the road, as detailed by FOX 5 Atlanta. Atsu didn't give up, however; he fled on foot only to be discovered hiding amongst some plants.
In a brazen display caught on dash cam and shared by the Sandy Springs Police Department, the chase ended with Atsu in custody. He now faces a slew of charges, including fleeing and attempting to elude, expired registration, improper lane change, reckless driving, possession of a Schedule II narcotic, and felony obstruction. "As a reminder to the criminals, your felonious acts WILL NOT be tolerated in Sandy Springs," the department wrote on Facebook, in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta.
