After 23 long years of uncertainty and unanswered questions, the shadow hanging over a brutal case that gripped Athens, Georgia has begun to lift with the recent arrest of a suspect in the murder of a University of Georgia law student. Edrick Lamont Faust, 48, faces charges linked to the death of Tara Louise Baker, who was found dead in her burning home back in 2001, as reported by WABE.
The breakthrough came after an intense collaboration between the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Athens-Clarke County police, who jointly conducted an "in-depth review and analysis" of the cold case which led to Faust's arrest; investigators worked tirelessly, sifted through evidence and pieced together a puzzle that seemed destined to remain incomplete, the GBI mentioned in a news release. Firefighters discovered the body of Baker, then 23 and a promising first-year law student, during their response to a fire at her Athens apartment, a grisly scene that was later determined to be a cover-up for her murder.
Specific details about what directed the authorities to zero in on Faust or the nature of his connection to Baker, if any, were not disclosed by officials. The charges against Faust, lodged upon his booking into the Athens-Clarke County Jail, include malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated sodomy, tampering with evidence, and arson, casting a net of serious accusations that paints a grim picture of the crime’s severity.
Reflecting on the case's progression, Athens-Clarke County Police Chief Jerry Saulters, who was present at the crime scene on that fateful day in January 2001, expressed a mix of relief and professional fulfillment, stating, "I remember being there during that horrific time, Seeing this case now full circle, I appreciate the hard work of the detectives, from then and now, Knowing that the evidence collected at that time contributed to the arrest today gives me tremendous pride in all the officers who worked this case over the years," WABE reported.
While this arrest marks a pivotal moment in a tragedy that has lingered over the community for decades, GBI Director Chris Hosey cautioned that it is but "the first step in finding justice for Tara." The long arc bending towards justice now bears the weight of the courts as they piece together the events that led to Baker's untimely demise and determine the fate of Edrick Lamont Faust, against whom the allegations now stand.
