A 13-year-old's life was tragically cut short following a shooting on Buford Highway, Brookhaven police reported.

Responding to a distressing call about a person shot at approximately 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Brookhaven officers rushed to the scene on the 3500 block of Buford Highway near Briarwood Road NE. They found a young teenager with a life-threatening gunshot wound. Despite their efforts to quickly administer life-saving procedures, the young victim was pronounced dead, due to sustain the injuries, according to a release from the Atlanta News First.

The Brookhaven Police Department has since taken into custody a 16-year-old in connection with the fatal incident. Early indications suggest the teenagers had been handling a gun, which ultimately discharged and led to the younger teen's death. The older teen is now facing charges of involuntary manslaughter. As of now, the identities of neither teenager have been disclosed.

"Officers began life-saving measures, but the victim died of his injuries," the FOX 5 Atlanta was told. Police investigators have interviewed several potential witnesses and are piecing together the circumstances of the shooting. The incident has once again raised concerns over gun safety and the accessibility of firearms to minors.

The local community has been left in a state of shock and mourning after the sudden and violent loss of a young life. With police withholding further details, the case remains under active investigation. Additional updates are expected as the inquiry progresses.
