Scottie Scheffler, the world's top-ranked golfer, was handcuffed and detained Friday morning near Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, following a misunderstanding with police officers at the scene of a fatal accident. The golfer was on his way to compete on Day 2 of the PGA Championship when the incident occurred.
A pedestrian had been struck by a bus and was pronounced dead at the scene, a grim backdrop to what would become a chaotic morning for Scheffler. According to a statement Scheffler released while warming up on the range and obtained by WBIR, "This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do."
Despite the early morning arrest, Scheffler managed to return to the championship and made his scheduled 10:08 a.m. tee time. Images of the golfer being handcuffed circulated in the media, while the PGA of America extended condolences to the family of the deceased vendor employee through a statement published by various news outlets, including NewsChannel 9.
His attorney, Steve Romines, clarified the legal stance surrounding Scheffler's arrest, who told AP News, "We will litigate the case as it goes." Romines described the situation as a misunderstanding, insisting that the golfer followed directions in a marked vehicle. Amidst the legal shuffle, the tournament progressed, with slight changes in schedule due to the earlier incident, and Scheffler, now unshackled, returned to the field to a mix of shock and support from the crowd. One fan was reported shouting "free Scottie!" as he commenced his participation in the championship’s second round.
