Banking giants from the U.S. and Canada are placing their bets on Arizona's renewable energy future, as they've put up financing for a massive solar energy project poised to light up Pinal County with sustainable power. The Box Canyon solar power project, a sprawling 300-megawatt initiative located south of Phoenix, has received a sizable $414 million construction credit facility. This hefty financial boost was announced on May 13, laying the foundation for what promises to be one of the area's most impactful green endeavors, as reported by ABC15.

Construction on the Box Canyon project is not new to the scene, having kicked off this December. The project marks a collaborative effort between Florida's BrightNight and Cordelio Power from Toronto, a company with the backing of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. Both companies have formed a joint venture, BOCA BN LLC, which, having sealed a long-term solar lease last October, plans to power ahead with construction on State Route 79, as per the Business Journal.

Funding is a major milestone for such an ambitious project, with names like Zions Bancorporation taking the lead as administrative agents and support from a roster of banks, including National Bank of Canada and Royal Bank of Canada. In a show of cross-border cooperation, these financial institutions are banking on the success of Arizona's renewable resources, as detailed by ABC15 News.

According to the Business Journal, "This successful [construction] financing is a significant milestone in funding the buildout of our extensive 37 GW renewable power portfolio." The collective effort underscores the importance of such a project that is set to bring clean power, along with hundreds of skilled jobs and energy security, to a rapidly growing Arizona region. The Box Canyon solar power initiative, slated to commence operations in early 2025, is expected to churn out enough juice to power roughly 77,000 homes and businesses every year.
