Ritz joined the nation in observing National Police Week, recognizing the service and dedication of federal, state, local, and Tribal law enforcement personnel. This year's homage, which spans from May 11 to May 17, was underscored by a statement from Attorney General Merrick Garland honoring those "who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the public," according to a news release from his office. Garland highlighted the perilous nature of policing, praising officers for their unwavering commitment even when faced with great danger.
Garland's sentiments were echoed by U.S. Attorney Ritz who, after almost two decades of service, paid tribute to the "bravery and dedication" of those law enforcement officers he's partnered with. Ritz told the Justice Department, that the officers' courage serves as his daily inspiration, and extended "deepest gratitude" on behalf of the U.S. Attorney’s Office to those risking their lives for public safety. The week is rooted in a tradition established by President Kennedy in 1962, aimed at honoring the contributions and sacrifices of peace officers.
All 50 states came together to commemorate the week, engaging in various events and memorials to amplify the message of gratitude. One of the poignant moments of the week was the Candlelight Vigil on Monday, May 13, where the names of more than 280 fallen officers from 2024 were read aloud, a somber honor for those killed or disabled in the line of duty this year.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall, which now bears the names of these latest heroes, serves as a permanent testament to their valor. It is on this wall that freshly inscribed names were added, etching a legacy of service into history. Notably, every May 15, known as Peace Officers Memorial Day, garners special attention to honor and remember the law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate price.
