A 37-year-old crewman, victim of a severe head injury aboard a fishing vessel off the coast of Peru, was medevaced by U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Munro recently, the Coast Guard reported. The individual working on the "Tiburon 9" was approximately 20 miles offshore when the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) Peru communicated his plight to the Cutter Munro around 1:13 p.m.

Subsequently, Cutter Munro wasted no time transiting quickly and arrived at Tiburon 9 at about 1:15 p.m., prepared to help the injured man. A medical team, accompanied by a translator, boarded the fishing vessel to swiftly assess and stabilize the patient before he was transferred to the Cutter Munro for further medical treatment at around 3:54 p.m., the Coast Guard said.

The vessel then made its way to a meeting point off the coast of Paracus, Peru, where it rendezvoused with a Peruvian Coast Guard Patrol craft. Once escorted, the Cutter Munro facilitated the transfer of the patient to local emergency medical services on land, ensuring his stable condition by 5:16 p.m., as reported by the U.S. Coast Guard News.

Commenting on the joint operation's success, U.S Coast Guard Captain Rula Deisher, Commanding Officer of the Cutter Munro, stated via U.S. Coast Guard News, "This opportunity to work with our partners in Peru off their coast, highlights the importance of our interoperability and ability to work closely with them." Deisher mentioned the Coast Guards' recent joint exercises near Lima, calling the recent rescue a rewarding payoff for these efforts.

The U.S. Coast Guard prides itself on search and rescue missions, which are one of its fundamental duties. It remains committed to cooperating with regional authorities. These efforts aim to ensure the safety of all hands at sea and maintain secure maritime boundaries shared with international partners, per the Coast Guard's mission.
