Eight individuals were plucked from peril by the U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday, escaping a near-disaster on a sinking boat some 40 miles from the shores of Galveston. According to Houston Chronicle, the beleaguered 48-foot craft began flooding with ocean waters as its passengers scrambled for help.
The harrowing event unfolded in broad daylight when a distress signal at approximately 4:36 p.m. was picked up by the Coast Guard command center. A helicopter, deftly navigating the turbulent Gulf winds, and a 45-foot response boat were sent to the rescue, penetrating 34 mph winds and braving 8-foot seas. The crew from the sinking vessel were found clinging to the remnants of their boat, each one eventually hoisted to safety.
No injuries were reported in an testament to the swiftness of the rescue operation, a scenario that so easily could have turned tragic. The vessel's owner now bears the responsibility of salvaging what remains of his once-seaworthy boat, a detail stated in a Coast Guard news release.
A gripping video capturing a portion of the daring rescue was publicized by the Coast Guard, showcasing the precision and bravery involved in such operations. The footage is available for viewing on the KHOU website, giving an up-close perspective of the rescue to the public.
