In a bid to bolster college prospects for students in their own backyard, Vanderbilt University has rolled out a full-ride scholarship program exclusively for Metro Nashville Public School (MNPS) students. Starting with first-year students applying for fall 2025, the initiative aims to remove financial barriers for local scholars eyeing the prestigious Nashville institution.
The initiative, dubbed the Vanderbilt Nashville Scholars program, supports MNPS students from families earning less than $100,000 annually. Under this scheme, admitted students can see a future free from the financial burdens of tuition fees, housing, and meals, according to information provided by NewsChannel5. Additionally, Vanderbilt has pledged a $6,000 stipend for students to undertake summer internships after their second or third year.
Vanderbilt Chancellor Daniel Diermeier underlined the inclusive nature of this outreach, stating, "If a student is qualified to attend Vanderbilt, we want them at Vanderbilt, and that is especially true of high-achieving students in our hometown of Nashville," as reported by Vanderbilt News. In collaboration with metro schools, Vanderbilt's scholarship program is designed not only to fund education but also to extend mentorship and guidance to high school students navigating the path to college. The collective effort seeks to enrich the Vanderbilt community with local talent and, in turn, reinforce the university's connection to Nashville.
As part of the supportive framework, Douglas Christiansen, Vanderbilt's vice provost for university enrollment affairs and dean of admissions and financial aid, emphasized the outreach efforts, "We’ve changed our publications, our website, everything trying to help students understand that it you can come to Vanderbilt and get a world class education, and we have the funds here to support you in that," as he told WKRN. The plan also entails close collaboration between the university and MNPS counselors, teachers, and administrators to better prepare students for the admissions process, not only at Vanderbilt but at other selective colleges as well.
