Washington, DC is upping the ante to draw in the crowds. In a bid to enhance the area's cultural scene and boost its economy, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Events DC are rolling out a hefty $3.5 million grant program targeting nonprofits that can bring large gatherings to the capital. The initiative, aiming to support large events pulling in over 10,000 attendees, is all about capitalizing on the city's knack for organizing big-ticket events, according to a statement obtained by dc.gov. “We can see and feel the energy people have for going to festivals and events right now, and there’s no city better at hosting and organizing large-scale events than Washington, DC,” Mayor Bowser stated.
Moola from this program isn't restricted; it can cover a gamut of costs like venue rental, government fees, and operational expenses. When groups throw their hats in the ring for some of that funding, they'll need to demonstrate potential economic perks such as new jobs, hotel bookings, and business engagement; they'll also need to ensure that the shindig they're planning also gives a nod to the history and culture of DC's communities, dc.gov shared.
Angie M. Gates, head honcho at Events DC, chimed in with her two cents, noting the importance of large-scale events to the city's financial health and its rep as a top-tier, family-friendly locale. “This $3.5 million grant program will provide crucial support to nonprofit organizations and ensure we create unique experiences that result in jobs, economic impact and lasting memories for residents, tourists and guests. I look forward to partnering with organizations to ensure our economic vitality for years to come, highlight our incredible local culture and reinforce our position as a top destination.” Gates relayed, per dc.gov.
The financial boost is being pumped in by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development through a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration's Travel, Tourism, and Outdoor Recreation program.
