Worcester Police Department's Vice Squad made waves with a narcotics bust on Tuesday, pinning down two suspects accused of trafficking the lethal drug fentanyl in what could be considered a substantial blow to local drug activities. According to a report detailing the operation, officers executed a search warrant at a residence on Country Club Boulevard and arrested 47-year-old Jorge Vidot-Villafane and 51-year-old Rafael Diaz at around 4:40 pm.
The arrests came after Diaz reportedly attempted to discard evidence, throwing two containers to the front porch area where police later recovered 20 bags of crack cocaine and 14 bags of fentanyl, according to the official Worcester Police Department press release. Additionally, inside the apartment, authorities found a larger bag of fentanyl weighing roughly 14 grams and 17 smaller bags, alongside drug paraphernalia and a pool of cash, totaling $1,727 in all. The report indicated an ongoing struggle to stem the tide of fentanyl, a substance that, despite its diminutive mass, carries the heavy cost of addiction and death.
Both men are now facing serious charges: Vidot-Villafane and Diaz have been charged with trafficking more than 10 grams of fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance, and Diaz's rap sheet also includes several active warrants for his arrest. Their apprehension underscores a commitment by the Worcester Police Department to tackle the grip of narcotics on their streets, which has been a relentless effort to safeguard the community from the infiltration of such drugs.
