A long stretch behind bars is on the horizon for Zachary Tyler Hackman, 24, after he was handed down a 19-year prison sentence for the slaying of his girlfriend's father, James Orlando Harris, in 2022.
The grim details unfolded as Multnomah County police responded to a harrowing scene on the evening of October 9, 2022, on a Northeast Marine Drive block. There they stumbled upon Harris' lifeless body. Later investigations by the Medical Examiner confirmed he was a victim of homicidal violence. Just two weeks following the discovery, Hackman was in cuffs, charged with murder, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.
Justice was meted out after a plea deal was inked between Hackman and the state, where Hackman was represented by Judge Jenna Plank, who presided over the proceedings; she accepted the plea on May 13, 2024, an agreement that was struck with Senior Deputy District Attorney Kevin Demer and Deputy District Attorney Alex Hargrove illuminated by the details shared by the District Attorney's office.
In addition to the 204 months for manslaughter in the first degree, Hackman faces a consecutive stint of 24 months for abuse of a corpse in the second degree, and when the gavel fell, it was decided that following his nearly two-decades-long term, the next three years will be spent under the watchful eye of post-prison supervision as public records indicate him being transported to the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
