A 66-year-old U.S. veteran faced a harrowing experience as he was held at gunpoint and carjacked in Deerfield Beach, a city just outside of Fort Lauderdale. The Broward Sheriff's Office has taken Rodney Montgomery Jr., 29, into custody for the crime, which occurred on May 24, CBS12 reported.
Montgomery Jr., is now facing a grave charge of armed carjacking. He allegedly approached the veteran's vehicle, which bore a disabled veteran license plate, as the elder was backing into his driveway. According to the BSO, Montgomery Jr. then threatened the veteran with a handgun and demanded he exits the vehicle. Frightened for his life, the veteran complied, and the suspect drove away with both the car and the victim's wallet still inside, as reported by WSVN.
The following day, Montgomery Jr. refused to appear before the court, where a judge denied his bond. Searches by local law enforcement culminated in his arrest in Pompano Beach.
During the rigorous investigation process, detectives from the sheriff’s office worked to pinpoint and eventually close in on Montgomery Jr. His arrest took place on Thursday, around 3:30 p.m., a tactical response to the brazen armed carjacking that has resonated with the Deerfield community's sense of security.
