After a five-year hiatus, the Zilker Eagle mini train is back on the tracks at Austin's Zilker Park, offering a new route and free rides to celebrate its return. The train, which had to shut down in 2019 due to track erosion caused by a storm, has been eagerly anticipated by both locals and visitors. The Austin Parks Foundation, after facing various challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and re-evaluation of train technology, has managed to bring the train back to life.
On its inaugural run, the Zilker Eagle was welcomed by excited passengers. Maria Fabian, who used to bring her children to ride the train in the 1980s and her grandchildren on its last operating day in 2019, returned to recreate memories with the younger generation of her family. "Now they're all grown up and excited to get on it again," Fabian's passenger Anella Ortez told CBS Austin. The anticipation for the train's return saw tickets selling out swiftly, indicating the community's affection for the miniature railroad.
Despite its popularity, the new Zilker Eagle needed to overcome more than just logistical hurdles. Joy Casnovsky, Chief Missions Officer with the Austin Parks Foundation, detailed the difficulties, including the pandemic and continued erosion problems. They also tried switching to an electric train, which proved to be inefficient for their needs. "It did not perform. It would not pull, and it would have had to be charging half the day," Casnovsky explained to CBS Austin.
The revamped route, now offering stunning views of the Downtown Austin skyline, may be shorter, but still retains the charm of the original experience. Passengers will pass through the Zilker Park playscape and two tunnels, adding to the enjoyment. "My favorite part was whenever we went through the tunnel where there were rainbows," said a granddaughter of Fabian in an interview with CBS Austin. The train operation hours are daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with each ride costing $6.
Furthermore, the Zilker Eagle is initiating a Community Hours Program thanks to the Bill Wood Foundation. This program offers free rides to the public every third Wednesday of each month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., as reported by CBS Austin. The Austin Parks Foundation aims to make the Zilker Eagle an inclusive experience, ensuring accessibility and enjoyment for everyone in the community.
For those who reminiscent about the days of the train's past, the Zilker Eagle's revitalization marks a joyous moment. "I was on there my whole life," a member of the Morris family shared with KVUE News as they celebrated their ability to participate in a tradition that has been part of Austin's culture for over 60 years. The community's overwhelming response during the opening reflects a shared enthusiasm for a treasured piece of Austin's history, now renewed for future generations to enjoy.
