As residents gear up to celebrate Independence Day with the traditional pomp of fireworks, the City of Alpharetta reminds the community to acknowledge Georgia's laws regarding their use. According to a recent announcement, fireworks are permitted statewide until 11:59 p.m. on holidays including July 4, with additional hours granted on New Year's Day from midnight to 1:00 a.m.
While the thrill of igniting fireworks captivates many, local ordinances must be heeded—under Georgia Law, fireworks can be set off from 10:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on unspecified days, assuming they do not contravene an existing general noise ordinance, the City of Alpharetta's policies, however, do not align with these particular stipulations since they were established before the July 1, 2018 cut-off. Fireworks aficionados must be mindful of the regulations which notably restrict usage within any park, city property without official permits, and within the domain of public roads, streets, or near railways.
The City's guidance emphasizes consideration for neighbors who may be sensitive to fireworks due to PTSD or disrupted pets, and they urge discussions between those planning firework displays and their neighbors to foster understanding and accommodate concerns, particularly since not everyone has the luxury of a day off post-celebrations on July 5. "Please be respectful and courteous to your neighbors," the city statement urged, highlighting the importance of communal harmony during the festivities.
If you're averse to the pyrotechnic displays, it's important to recognize that Georgia's laws give individuals over 18 the right to use fireworks within the prescribed times so a respectful, open dialogue is encouraged when neighbors come forward to discuss their plans to launch fireworks, the approach is not just a legal formality, but an act of civility to consider. For those encountering fireworks being used outside the allowed times, the city implores the public to report incidents as they occur by contacting the Department of Public Safety at 678-297-6300, Option 1, with pertinent details of the situation and location.
