
A suspect was fatally shot by Phoenix Police officers near Coronado Park on Sunday afternoon, marking the city's 29th officer-involved shooting of the year, officials said. The incident, which took place around 2 p.m. near McDowell Road and 12th Street, escalated when police confronted an individual accused of an armed motorcycle theft, FOX 10 Phoenix reported.
According to the initial report, the suspect was attempting to steal the motorcycle when he was spotted in an alley by the responding officers. Allegedly, the armed man raised a gun in the air and fired at officers, which led to police discharging their weapons. "After the shooting, the suspect dropped the gun and officers moved up to provide medical aid. The fire department responded and transported the man to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. The initial victims of the robbery remained on scene and were unharmed," Phoenix Police detailed in a statement.
This incident comes as the 10th shooting incident this year involving the Phoenix Police Department, ABC 15 reported. There were no injuries to officers reported in the confrontation. Meanwhile, the identity of the deceased has not been released as investigations are ongoing. Police added that before their arrival, there was a transaction involving the motorcycle, but it remains unclear whether the deceased was buying or selling the bike.
