The City of Atlanta is propelling its citizens toward a greener future, rolling out a rebate program for residents who purchase e-bikes. Starting this Sunday, individuals within the Atlanta jurisdiction can take advantage of rebates up to $2,000 when they buy a new e-bike, in an effort to reduce car dependency and promote sustainability.

As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, PropelATL in collaboration with City Councilmember Matt Westmoreland, spearheaded the initiative. "I was in Denver. Denver has an e-bike rebate program, and I was like why not Atlanta," Jones said, expressing the inspiration behind bringing the program to the city. The program, backed by a $1 million city investment, prioritizes those earning less than $54,000 a year, with 75% of the rebates set aside for this income bracket.

The approved plan details various rebate options, according to a WSB-TV statement. Income-eligible residents could receive $1,500 for a standard e-bike and $2,000 for a cargo e-bike. Meanwhile, other residents are not left out, as they can still qualify for $500 for a standard e-bike and $1,000 for a cargo bike. The move aims to not only enhance personal health and the environment but also to bring the joy and functionality of e-biking to a wider community.

"It just opens up a lot of doors for people who normally wouldn’t be on bikes before this," said Patrick Gregory, co-partner of Peachtree Bikes, in an interview with WSB-TV. E-bikes, known for boosting a rider's pedaling power, have surged in popularity and now represent about half of the business at Peachtree Bikes. With costs often starting around $2,000, the rebate significantly lowers the barrier to entry for potential cyclists.

The program, managed by the Atlanta Regional Commission, will funnel the funds through a quarterly lottery system, ensuring residents have multiple opportunities to tap into the initiative. Interested parties can submit applications through the ARC’s website. Furthermore, Councilman Westmoreland highlights the complementarity of the rebate program with ongoing infrastructure work, including a $750 million bond aimed at improving the city's cycling infrastructure, as an essential piece to this eco-friendly puzzle.
