A sense of unease hung over Austin as a beloved drag brunch was abruptly canceled following a bomb threat this past Saturday at The Brewtorium Brewery & Kitchen. The venue, which had been set to host a vibrant amalgamation of brunch, drinks, and music alongside a drag performance, was compelled to shut down operations for the day in response to the alarming threat. In a message posted to their Instagram page, The Brewtorium stated, "It breaks our hearts that this kind of thing still exists," echoing a sentiment of exasperation and disbelief that such acts of intimidation and hate persist in troubling our communal spaces.
Visitors were shaken by the sudden cancellation, having been gathered in anticipation of a day celebrating pride and community. According to a report by KXAN, Jacob Hartwell, who was in attendance, recalled the unnerving moment when an event presenter had to inform the crowd, "hey I am really sorry, but we don’t want to flip a coin here and make the wrong decision and keep people here in a situation that might not be safe." Upon arrival, investigating police officers diligently searched the premises but did not find anything suspicious, as they had seen a couple of cops milling around outside and knew the building had been swept multiple times.
The Austin Police Department, upon notification of the threat, immediately dispatched officers to the scene. Their swift action ensured the safety of potential targets of this menace, as they scoured the space for any signs of danger. As KVUE reports, there was no danger found to the public, a conclusion that brought a sigh of relief to the tense atmosphere yet remained clouded by the seriousness of the threat. The nature of the threat, while not clarified by officials, is still under investigation.
