As families look for ways to engage in community events that cater to the needs of all members, the Austin Police Department (APD) is stepping up with a fresh initiative. This Saturday introduces the Inaugural Autism Sensory Fair, a pioneering event organized in conjunction with partners from the Austin Fire Department (AFD), Austin-Travis County EMS (A/TCEMS), and other local non-profits. Scheduled for June 8, the fair is designed with individuals with autism in mind, providing a space that acknowledges and respects their sensory experiences, according to the City of Austin.
Set to unfold at 4101 S. Industrial Dr., Ste. 260, Austin, TX 78744, the event will welcome attendees from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Among the attractions are interactions with local first responders and opportunities to observe outdoor traffic stop demonstrations. For younger guests, the fair offers face-painting activities. Meanwhile, an indoor de-stimulation room ensures that anyone in need of a quiet retreat can find solace, a key consideration for those who might find typical fair environments overwhelming.
The Austin Police Department's Office of Community Liaison will be on hand for interviews during the fair. This event not only marks a significant outreach by the APD and partnering services but also signifies a broader commitment to creating inclusive spaces within the community. It is a notable step in acknowledging the diverse needs of Austin’s citizens and fostering an environment where all can participate comfortably.
