An Austin Police Department officer, identified as Cameron Caldwell, has been arrested on charges related to injuring a child, as confirmed by Cedar Park Police Department (CPPD). Caldwell, who surrendered to authorities at the Williamson County Jail, faces two counts of Injury to a Child, said to have arisen from an incident that took place at his Cedar Park home, according to KVUE.
The ongoing investigation remains in the hands of CPPD, and as of now, details surrounding the case are limited; however, this is not the first time Officer Caldwell has been under scrutiny, before this, in August 2016 he was suspended for his conduct during an arrest at South by Southwest (SXSW) when he pepper-sprayed a handcuffed man, captured on video, Caldwell informed the man to cease kicking, and shortly thereafter deployed the pepper spray, the engagement between the officer and Chicago native Tyrone Wilson unfolded during Wilson's misdemeanor arrest for resisting, culminating in Caldwell's disciplinary suspension for 45 days, as per KVUE.
In light of the current charges, the Austin Police Department has stated that Caldwell has been put on restricted duty and notes that it is actively cooperating with CPPD's investigation. "Our Department is cooperating with the investigating agency, the Cedar Park Police Department," APD mentioned in a statement disclosed by KXAN. Parallel to the criminal probe, an administrative inquiry has been initiated to explore the full context of Officer Caldwell's situation.
