A sunny day on Lake Lyndon B. Johnson took a dangerous turn when a boat operator was tossed overboard, causing the unmanned vessel to wreak havoc, which resulted in multiple injuries and one arrest this past Saturday. According to the Texas Game Wardens, the chaos unfolded around 2 p.m. when the boat, still under power, started striking other boats after the operator went overboard CBS Austin reported.
Witnesses near a sandbar reported to have suddenly seen a rogue boat coming dangerously toward them. "It was one of the most terrifying experiences I’ve ever had," James Schleicher recounted in an interview with KXAN. Schleicher and fellow boaters watched helplessly as the vessel narrowly missed his boat but struck another, injuring several people in the process. Following a few erratic movements, someone managed to board the runaway boat and terminate the engine, preventing further harm.
In response to the incident, Texas Game Wardens, LCRA rangers, and local first responders were quickly on the scene to assist the injured. One of the victims required transportation to a hospital in Austin, while two others were taken to a more localized hospital for treatment. Additional injuries were reported, but these individuals did not need hospitalization. One arrest was made in connection with the disorderly scene, though details of the detainment have, at the time of press, not been disclosed.
Lake safety has been brought sharply into focus following the incident. Ronnie Madrid, a local boater, stressed the paramount importance of vigilance on the water during an interview with KXAN. "I mean, it's just one wrong mistake and you're killing somebody and that's horrible," Madrid said, highlighting the thin line between a day of leisure and tragedy. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department advises boaters to wear life jackets, make use of ignition safety switches, maintain safe speeds, and avoid alcohol while boating.
The investigation into how exactly the boat operator ended up overboard and the subsequent chain of events remains ongoing. Lake LBJ is a popular recreational spot frequented by families and water enthusiasts alike, located about 45 miles northwest of Austin, Texas.
