The Travis County Sheriff's Office has concluded a somber three-day search at Lake Travis, recovering the body of a 26-year-old swimmer who went missing on June 8. The individual, whose name has not been released by authorities, was last seen clinging to a flotation device near a pontoon boat in Devil's Cove. According to a FOX 7 Austin report, the search began after deputies received reports that the man had disappeared from sight between 15 to 20 minutes.
Dive teams and multiple agencies joined efforts, searching through the lake's depths with sonar technology on land, from the air, and on the surface. Eventually, the man's body was located in 54 feet of water. "We search every day we can," Kristen Dark of the Travis County Sheriff's Office told CBS Austin, emphasizing the exhaustive efforts involved in such recoveries. "We search until we have exhausted all the resources and tools we have until we've searched every feasible location that person can be."
While the man was seen without a life vest, albeit equipped with a flotation device, the incident adds to a somber statistic implying a dark trend: No individuals recovered from Lake Travis drownings in recent memory were wearing life jackets. "We have never recovered a body from Lake Travis that had a life jacket on," Dark pointed out in the CBS Austin interview. This discovery marks the first such tragic incident on Lake Travis this year, while previous years saw several recoveries including four in 2023 and six in 2022.
The sheriff's office emphasized the vital importance of water safety, especially as the summer season ramps up and draws crowds eager for lakeside recreation. Dark underscored this, imploring visitors to be vigilant. "Please just make sure to follow the law, keep your eye on each other, and don't take risks in the water," she said. According to statements Dark gave to CBS Austin, wearing life jackets, available for loan in most parks around the lake, is one tangible measure that could reduce the risk of such tragedies significantly. The Texas Game Wardens, involved in the search, extended their condolences to the victim's family and loved ones, who were present at Lake Travis throughout the harrowing days following his disappearance.
