A Boston-area man identified as a member of the violent gang Cameron Street, has been handed a nearly 21-year prison sentence following a conviction on federal racketeering charges related to attempted murder and other violent crimes. Daronde Bethea, known as “Freeze,” age 32, was sentenced to 250 months in prison and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to charges including RICO conspiracy, interference with commerce by violence, and illegal firearm possession, according to the Department of Justice.
Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy expressed the gravity of Bethea's actions, saying, "This defendant will now pay a very heavy price for all the violence inflicted on our communities," as reported by the Department of Justice. A collaborative force of local, state, and federal agencies, were instrumental in achieving this conviction, showcasing their dedication to curbing violent crime and safeguarding the community. Bethea's involvement with the gang included an attempt on a rival gang member's life in Dorchester back in June 2018, in which the victim suffered a collapsed lung after being shot multiple times as he entered his car.
The sentencing reflects a broader commitment to addressing gang violence and organized crime. Special Agent in Charge of the ATF's Boston Field Division, James M. Ferguson, emphasized that this outcome sends a strong message to the community that "violent gang members will be held accountable" and is a top priority for the law enforcement agencies involved, as stated by the Department of Justice. In addition to attempted murder, Bethea's criminal record includes participation in violent home invasions in Dorchester and Canton, with the latter incident captured on police dash camera footage.
While Bethea awaits the commencement of his prison term, the charging documents serve as a reminder that co-accused individuals remain presumed innocent until proven guilty. The federal initiative and the agencies involved continue their resolve to counteract the influence of gangs like Cameron Street and to reinforce safety within affected communities.
