The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert for residents of the 002nd District (Wentworth) following a series of robberies. The incidents in question involved groups of two to four male suspects who, in a brazen display of force, emerged from a white Dodge Challenger before robbing individuals at gunpoint. The victims, isolated and vulnerable in a public way, were coerced into surrendering their wallets and cell phones to these armed assailants.
The robberies occurred early in the morning on June 5, 2024, with the first taking place on the 5400 block of South Hyde Park Blvd. at 7:00 a.m. and the second following closely at 6:50 A.M. on the 1600 block of East 53rd St. The suspects used the cover of dawn to quickly and forcefully assert control, presumably to avoid heavily populated areas and minimize being caught in the act. Witnesses have described the suspects as African-American males, standing between 5'05" and 5'06" with slim builds, each weighing approximately 130–140 lbs and obscuring their identities with black hooded sweatshirts and ski masks.
The Chicago Police are encouraging citizens to be vigilant and to promptly report any activities that seem out of place or suspect. Admonishments to citizens include maintaining a heightened sense of awareness, especially while walking alone, and resisting the urge to boldly engage with the assailants. The authorities highlight the importance of remembering any unique characteristics of the suspects that could aid in their identification and capture.
Individuals confronted by the suspects should strive to remain composed and to safely observe any distinguishing features, such as, "unique physical characteristics (scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc.)." In the event of an encounter, the police stress the importance of not attempting to actively pursue a fleeing assailant but instead to "report the information to the police." The Chicago Police Department counsels that, if approached by a witness to the incident, victims should request the witness's contact details for further engagement. It is strongly advised for those involved to "Dial 9-1-1 immediately and remain on scene when possible," allowing law enforcement to take command of the situation as swiftly as possible.
