In a somber series of events that gripped the Columbus community, multiple children have been charged in relation to the drowning of a local teen. The body of 15-year-old Zahmere Greene was retrieved from a pond near the Oakland Park area, as reported by Muscogee County coroner Buddy Bryan, and relayed by WTVM. A seemingly innocent outing turned into a tragedy with Greene's demise on May 23, though it was not immediately reported to police, raising grave questions about the children's actions post-event.
Investigating the incident, Columbus Police discovered that multiple children were present at the time of the accident. An 11-year-old has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and concealing the death of another. Shane Sano, 17, has been charged with concealing the death of another and, due to his age, his case was bound over to Superior Court as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Other juveniles, also present, have similarly been charged with concealing the death of another – their ages ranging from 9 to 12 years old.
The community is left to wrestle with a duel reality – the loss of a young life and the culpability of children seemingly too young to grapple with such weighty concepts of mortality and legal responsibility. The 11-year-old facing the manslaughter charge is currently held in the Regional Youth Detention Center, and Sano is in Muscogee County Jail, a stark reminder of how swiftly joy can pivot to despair.
Columbus Police underscored the criticality for parents to instill in their progeny the ethos of responsibility – to always "see something, say something," which can act as a bulwark against tragedies like these. As a community, when faced with tribulations that seem to defy any rational understanding, all that remains is to hope such lessons ardently resonate amongst the youth. Ts.
