The City of Dallas hosted its annual Pride in Excellence Awards Reception this past Wednesday, coinciding with the celebration of Pride Month. Notable figures such as State Representative HD 100 Venton Jones and Council Member Omar Narvaez, alongside the City's LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group, contributed to the accolades.
The Adam Medrano Excellence in Leadership Award went to Gary Sanchez, Director of Public Affairs at Visit Dallas. Sanchez has a reputation for building essential partnerships across the community, especially within the hospitality and travel industry, to promote inclusive policies. The award for Outstanding Leadership in Business was earned by Kam and Teri De Leon, owners of THE SHINDIG FOOD PARK, for their revitalizing work in East Dallas and their role in promoting local enterprise.
During the ceremony, advocacy and service were a consistent theme, as evidenced by recipients like Jeff Strater, notably for his extensive work across several Democratic organizations and national campaigns, and Judge Katie Sprinkle, whose legal career has been notably marked by her focus on criminal defense and LGBTQ issues. Strater has even garnered the IABC Gold Quill Award for past marketing campaigns, showing a blend of professional excellence and community service.
Recognition also extended into arts and culture, as the posthumous award was presented to Jesse Tafalla for his long-standing commitment to social causes, alongside Pedro Perez II for his cultural contributions through Alegre Ballet Folklórico. In health and human services, Jalenzski Brown was honored for his efforts in HIV and STD prevention and treatment services at the Resource Center. Meanwhile, philanthropic acknowledgment was given to Keith Pomykal for his support of various charitable initiatives and local governance.
