A swimmer in his 30s went missing in the Colorado River in Bastrop, prompting a search and recovery operation by local emergency services on Monday evening. Bastrop County Emergency Services District No. 2 responded to the scene around 7:45 p.m. after receiving a distress call regarding a swimmer who appeared to be struggling in the water before going under and not resurfacing, KXAN reports.
The emergency services team faced challenges due to the dynamic water conditions and the presence of sandbars complicating the search efforts. The urgency of the rescue effort was intensified by the hydraulic conditions and restricted lighting conditions, which limited Monday night's operations, according to the same source.
Further complicating the search, FOX 7 Austin reported that the missing individual was observed going underwater by family members who were present during the incident. Numerous agencies, including fire crews, used drones and boats to scour the river and adjacent shores.
"Search efforts are affected by rapidly changing water conditions and sandbars in the area," Bastrop County ESD told KXAN. As the mission shifted from rescue to recovery, jurisdiction over the ongoing operation was transferred to the police and the Lower Colorado River Authority.
Bastrop County Emergency Services District No. 2 has also issued a reminder of the importance of wearing life jackets while on the water, underlining the unpredictability of river conditions and the inherent risks involved in aquatic activities.
