In Gardner, Massachusetts, residents have been tricked by thieves masquerading as Amazon delivery drivers, a ruse designed to steal packages directly from porches. This string of deceptions has been carried out by individuals wearing counterfeit Amazon apparel to blend in with the expected daily rhythm of deliveries. According to CBS News Boston, one resident, Matt Elsevier, reported a thief who "came up. It looked like he had the phone out with a package, ready to take a picture to confirm delivery." The suspect, however, replaced the actual delivery with an empty box.
The trend of stealing packages in such a calculated manner speaks to a broader issue of opportunistic crime, though it remains unclear how perpetrators are selecting their targets. Detective Lieutenant Matt Arsenault of the Gardner Police speculated in an interview that "there's maybe somebody tipping them off that 'Hey, a cellphone might be delivered to this address,'" as reported by WCVB. Notably, the Gardner Police Department has seen an increase in such incidents over the past two months, indicating the need for heightened vigilance among residents.
Gardner police are now advising community members to be alert and take note of suspicious vehicles or individuals resembling delivery drivers. Cases have involved suspects not simply taking delivered items but replacing them with an empty container, possibly to delay the discovery of the theft. The local authorities are asking the public to help by reporting any suspicious activities and identifying information like license plate numbers, as mentioned in the Boston.com article.
The response from Amazon itself was quick, with spokesperson Austin Stowe stating, "We're looking into this incident and recognize that, unfortunately, there are bad actors who wear Amazon-branded or look-alike apparel to commit package theft." Amazon is also proactive in monitoring for unauthorized apparel sales and working with law enforcement to curb these deceptive practices, which was detailed by CBS News Boston. Customers who suspect that they have been victims of package theft are encouraged to touch base with Amazon and file a police report, particularly after confirming delivery with a tracking number.
To prevent further incidents, Amazon offers a range of preventative measures; including real-time tracking, specifying drop-off locations that are not visible from the street, and selecting specific delivery days. Additionally, the company suggests the use, of Ring Video doorbells and having packages delivered to a secure alternate location such as a garage or Amazon locker. The hope is that these strategies will mitigate the risks posed by these deceitful porch pirates, arming residents with the tools to protect their deliveries in the wake of the increasing package thefts in Gardner and beyond.
