The Fall River Police Department responded to a distress call around 6:40 a.m. and were joined in the rescue effort by the harbormaster’s assistant, firefighters, EMS units, and the Massachusetts Environmental Police. Both men were thrown into the water during the ordeal, the younger brother managed to escape with his life, surviving the ordeal.

One of the brothers was taken to Saint Anne’s Hospital where he later died from his injuries, as reported by The Boston Globe. Authorities have yet to release the names of the two men. The surviving brother had managed to cling to a flotation device while his sibling, tragically, did not.

The circumstances leading to the vessel taking on water, began with an attempt to free the propeller from the rope that ensnared it. The investigation into this fatal incident continues, but the police, have not disclosed further details at this time.
