In a recent development that has significant implications for the local workforce, FedEx has decided to shutter its Conover facility in Catawba County, North Carolina. Starting September 3, the move will result in 69 total layoffs, with the split detailed as 66 couriers and 3 managers, as reported by The Charlotte Observer. The decision to close the location at 1228 Commerce St. comes as a part of wider "business needs," a term outlined by FedEx spokesman David Westrick.
As elaborated by national transportation company, options such as relocation, severance packages, and leave of absence are on the table for those affected. This move is not without precedent, considering the recent layoffs at HNI Workplace Furnishings LLC and other local businesses, bringing the number of impacted workers in the area this year to nearly 400, as stated in a report by Country 103.7 FM.
While this marks a clear contraction for FedEx in the Catawba County region, it's crucial to note FedEx's broader footprint. With over 530,000 employees and 15 major operating locations—including one at Greensboro’s Piedmont Triad Airport Authority—the company remains a significant player in the transport industry, even in light of experiencing a 4% revenue decrease in 2023, descending to $90.2 billion according to its SEC filings.
Despite the overall healthy state of the job market in Catawba County, which sported a 3.2% unemployment rate in April—ranking it 45th lowest in the state—these layoffs underscore the volatility that can still affect local economies. WSOC-TV has learned that some employees may remain within the company, but based at different locations, making the transition a touch less disruptive for some of the individuals involved. The benefits packages, including severance, seek to mitigate the immediate impact as the job search begins for others.
