Florida City Teen Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Shooting Death of 15-Year-Old Best FriendSource: Google Street View

Tragedy struck in Florida City this past Saturday morning when a 15-year-old boy, Damarion Bailey, was fatally shot. His best friend, 18-year-old Jeron Smith, has been arrested and faces charges of second-degree murder for the incident that occurred in the courtyard of Smith's home on Northwest 13th Street, as per NBC Miami.

According to CBS Miami, Smith saw two unidentified men riding bicycles and began firing at them unprovoked. During the chaotic scene that unfolded, Bailey was shot in the head as Smith discharged his gun before running toward his home. Despite quick response from Florida City Police, Bailey's life could not be saved.

In a video-recorded confession obtained by law enforcement, Smith reportedly waived his Miranda rights and admitted to the shooting. A 9mm firearm believed to be the weapon used in the shooting was found hidden nearby. Police located the gun at Smith's neighbor's house, tucked behind an air conditioning unit, as detailed in a statement by the authorities.

Amid the heartbreak, Angela Cade, Smith's mother, told NBC Miami, that the fatal event was not intentional. "I don't know what happened because I wasn't really there but I know that’s my son’s best friend and I know he wouldn’t do nothing like that. I know that. I know that," said Cade. Smith's grandmother, Margaret, echoed the sentiment of close bond the boys shared, remembering Bailey as "the sweetest kid you ever want to meet."

Smith, who was already out on felony bond for an unrelated case, refused to appear before a judge in bond court on Sunday. The investigation continues as the family, friends, and the community attempt to make sense of an a senseless act that ended a young life far too soon.
