Early Thursday morning, a tanker truck met with an accident at Miami International Airport, resulting in a hazardous spill of fuel close to one of the runways. WSVN reported that Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units arrived at the 4200 block of Northwest 21st Street, finding the vehicle on its side with an ongoing fuel leak.
The fuel spill, which occurred around 5:45 a.m., drew over 15 MDFR units to the scene. According to Local 10, the overturned truck was carrying as much as 7,000 gallons of jet fuel. Firefighters present were able to rapidly minimize the spill and cut off potential ignition sources on the vehicle, thwarting further disaster.
The incident prompted an extensive response from hazardous materials crews, who are engaged in containing the spill. The Department of Environmental Resources and Management (DERM) has been promptly informed of the situation and is presumably coordinating with the response efforts. Signature Aviation MIA, the fixed-based operator at the airport serving private jets, was identified as the company managing the overturned tanker.
Meanwhile, the driver of the fuel truck was attended to by MDFR but refused transport for further medical care. With the truck tipped over, two individuals with minor injuries were taken to a local hospital, as per reports from both sources. Details regarding the circumstances leading to the accident remain scarce at this point.
