
A 19-year-old Gainesville man has been charged with the murder of a teenager following a shooting incident at a local apartment complex. Ja'quez Jeremiah Marquis Sims is facing charges after 16-year-old Jaishawn Overstreet was shot in the head at Ridgecrest Apartments on April 27. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Overstreet was allegedly there to meet someone for "alleged criminal activity" when the shooting occurred.
Sims was arrested at his Swann Drive home after an investigation by police who executed a search warrant. The teen's encounter to allegedly meet with Sims tragically ended when he was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, police had been investigating the case leading to Sims' arrest on charges of murder and aggravated assault.
Residents of the community have been left shaken by the violent event that unfolded in their neighborhood. Overstreet was pronounced dead a few days after doctors attempted to quickly save his life. Now, his family and friends are to left to mourn a life cut devastatingly short.
At present, Sims is being held without bond in the Hall County Jail. He is formally charged with felony malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. It is unclear whether Sims has an attorney or has yet to enter a plea. The authorities are to continue investigating the matter to possibly uncover further details behind the fateful meeting that led to the loss of Overstreet's life.
