As the monsoon season descends upon Arizona, residents are urged to gear up for the potential hazards that come with it. The City of Goodyear is taking steps to ensure the safety of its community with tools and resources designed to combat the unpredictability of monsoons, which may include dust storms, lightning strikes, torrential rainfall, and the threat of flash flooding.
One of the key tools available is the GY Alerts system, a free emergency notification service provided by the city. According to the City of Goodyear's official website, this system delivers real-time updates to phones or devices about imminent threats, such as road closures and power outages, and offers guidance on protective actions to keep the public safe. Community members can sign up for these alerts to stay informed during the monsoon season.
Beyond digital alerts, the city is also offering tangible assistance in the form of sandbags to help residents protect their properties from flood damage. These sandbags are available at no cost, on a first-come, first-served basis, signaling the city's proactive stance on disaster preparedness. However, those interested in availing of this service are reminded to bring their own shovels to fill bags with sand.
Pick-up locations for sandbags have been strategically placed throughout Goodyear for accessibility. These locations include Thomas Park at the intersection of Thomas Road and 144th Avenue, Roscoe Dog Park south of MC85 on Estrella Parkway, and Goodyear Fire Station 182 located at 10701 S. Estrella Parkway. As the monsoon season progresses, the proactive efforts of the Goodyear city administration, and the participation of its citizens, will be crucial in weathering the storms ahead.
