The Hall County Sheriff's Office has issued an extensive statement concerning the disappearance of 12-year-old Maria Gomez-Perez of Gainesville, who has been missing since May 29, triggering an outpouring of community concern and concerted search efforts. These details were brought to light in pieces published by Now Habersham, detailing not only the ongoing investigation but also the Sheriff’s Office's response to public scrutiny.
In an attempt to directly to address the rising tide of public concern, officials stated, "The Hall County Sheriff’s Office is aware of the high level of community concern about the disappearance of 12-year- old Maria Gomez-Perez of Gainesville, and we want to emphasize to our citizens that we, too, are extremely concerned about Maria’s well-being," in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta. In that same vein, Now Habersham reported that the GBI determined Maria’s case did not meet three key activation criteria for a Levi's Call, the state's version of an Amber Alert, raising questions among some community members about the parameters of such protocols.
Responding to often voiced concerns on social media and various communication channels, the Sheriff's Office made clear that while they cannot divulge all aspects of their ongoing investigation, substantial efforts are being taken to locate the girl. They refuted claims that minimal work has been done, reinforcing the point that, "We have a team of investigators who have been and are continuing to diligently work this case. Our goal is to bring Maria home and ensure she is safe. We know the community wants that, too," as per the details outlined in the joint coverage from FOX 5 Atlanta.
The public has been urged to use specific, reliable ways to report any potential leads. According to the statement by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, "Social media is not the most reliable way to communicate with our investigators." They encourage the public to either call the Special Investigations Unit directly at 770-503-3232 or send tips via email to [email protected], actions which would ensure that relevant information is more accurately and promptly assessed.
Maria last seen at her home on Westside Drive, described as 5-feet-3 inches tall, and weighing between 100 and 110 pounds, with long black hair and brown eyes, was reportedly wearing a bright blue shirt at the time of her disappearance.
