The Henry County Board of Education recently celebrated the accomplishments of Lailah Metallo, a standout graphic design student from the Academy for Advanced Studies, whose artwork - professional and mature beyond her years - is earning her recognition far beyond the county lines. According to the Henry Herald, Metallo's impressive portfolio grabbed third place in the state for Graphic Design and notched a second-place finish at the Georgia Skills USA Regionals.
Her prowess extended to rebranding projects, including the seal of the Henry County Police Department. Her designs also captured the attention of the New York City Police Department, prompting them to commission Metallo to create a challenge coin for their Transportation Bureau. This remarkable achievement comes from a student who has yet to graduate from high school. Yet, here she is, with her work circulating among law enforcement officers, a testament to the reach and influence of innovative design in spaces far from conventional gallery walls.
The Henry School Board took a moment on June 10, 2024 to honor Metallo's achievements and the statement that followed was no less laudatory—“Lailah is a true definition of the outstanding work that comes out of the Academy for Advanced Studies and a true definition of what it means to be exceptional at Henry County Schools,” the school praised, as reported by the Henry Herald.
Among the board members and Principal Douglas Blackwell, Metallo stood as a representation of the talent brewing within Henry County Schools. It's clear that whether it's a local police department or a major city's force, the power of good design leaves an indelible mark, bridging communities and professions through a universal aesthetic language that transcends age. Metallo's ascent in the world of graphic design, while still navigating the ecosystem of secondary education, exemplifies this perfectly.
