The Centerville United Methodist Church, a structure woven into the very fabric of Hickman County's history, endured a fire on Monday afternoon. Firefighters from multiple units, including the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department and the Maury County Fire Department, battled the flames under the duress of intense heat, as per a report from NewsChannel5. The fire, which appears to have originated from an electrical issue within the pastor's office, was quelled before it could ravage the century-old sanctuary, a portion of the church that bears the legacy of innumerable community milestones.
Despite the destruction in certain sections, including the pastor's office and the Sunday school rooms, no injuries were reported. "The most important thing to me is no one got injured," Pastor Niles Worsham told NewsChannel5 in an interview, expressing a pervasive sense of relief. A statement obtained by WKRN from the Centerville United Methodist Church's official Facebook page also confirmed that no parishioners were present at the time of the incident, offering a glint of solace amidst the chaos.
Cody Johnson, deputy chief of Centerville Volunteer Fire Department, shared his personal connection to the church with NewsChannel5, stating, "I had my wedding here... This building means a lot to a lot of us in this community." Sentiments echo through the community as many have deep ties to a the church that predates the founding of Centerville. Alice Martin, a lifelong churchgoer, reflected on the generational bonds tied to the church, recounting the church's history of meeting in homes as early as 1807, as described in a report by NewsChannel5.
Following the fire, Pastor Worsham focused on the collective spirit and heart of the community as he went out to procure new Bibles on Tuesday morning, determined to support his congregation through the rebuilding process. "We're looking at a lot, a lot of cleanup," Worsham said, as reported by WSMV. The church, which stands as a testament to the town's endurance and collective memory, has weathered similar adversity before with a fire breaking out in 1923, reminding the community of its resilience.
