Chaos erupted on a busy Houston freeway as an 18-wheeler carrying a massive load of 8,800 gallons of fuel burst into flames following a collision with a Chevy Tahoe Saturday night. The fiery incident, which unfolded on the I-45 near Tidwell Road, resulted in the closure of all southbound lanes, bringing traffic to a grinding halt well into Sunday afternoon. Miraculously, the truck driver managed to quickly escape and was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, stated the Houston Chronicle. On the other hand, the driver of the Tahoe was not so fortunate, sustaining critical injuries and is currently receiving treatment following the harrowing episode.
Authorities were quick to respond, with Houston Fire Department deploying HazMat teams to contain the blaze that ensued post-collision, skillfully applying a foam blanket to extinguish the fire. Despite the volatile situation, no firefighters were reported injured, as per a briefing provided to KHOU. All through the night and into the following day, crews worked tirelessly to open back up the northbound lanes, restoring a semblance of normality to one part of the freeway.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) was present on the scene to oversee the grueling task of clearing the debris and making necessary repairs to the damaged roadway. Traffic advisories suggested that motorists take alternative routes such as Shepherd or Airline Drive to circumvent the disrupted lanes. According to HPD spokesperson Shay Awosiyan, the crash was caused by an unsafe lane change executed by the Tahoe as it emerged from the exit ramp and tried to merge into traffic, clipping the 18-wheeler, which led to it swerve, tip over and catch fire.
