A suspect has been formally charged in connection with a fatal shooting last month that left a 23-year-old man dead in an apartment complex parking lot, Houston police said. The incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on May 28 at 5470 Braesvalley Drive. According to the Houston Police Department (HPD), Jomaal Xavierous Carroll, 19, has been charged with murder and is currently wanted, as reported by the City of Houston's official news release.
The charged suspect, Carroll, is purported to immediately have fled the scene on foot after an altercation that resulted in multiple gunshot wounds to the victim, Roland Dewayne Vessel. Efforts to locate Carroll escalated after the police released surveillance footage the following day, helping to firmly identify him as the suspect in this case. A warrant for Carroll's arrest was issued on Tuesday, June 11, as confirmed by the HPD Homicide Division.
Sergeant W. Dunn and Detective S. Chettry of the HPD Homicide Division led the response to the initial call, discovering the victim at the aforementioned location where paramedics later pronounced him deceased. In their ongoing investigation, it was revealed that Carroll and Vessel were involved in a verbal argument before the shooting occurred. HPD has made available a 2023 booking photo of Carroll and surveillance photos from the scene, as mentioned in their news release.
