A severely neglected dog named Valor has been rescued and is being cared for by Houston's Special Pals animal shelter, the organization reported on Monday. Found in a forest near a rural farm, Valor was brought in by a street rescuer responding to a Facebook post highlighting the dog's plight. According to a report by the Houston Chronicle, the dog had been considered a nuisance by local residents, who went so far as to discourage feeding it to prevent it from coming back, with threats of shooting the animal if it remained.
These circumstances found Valor in a state that Becky French, Executive Director of Special Pals, described as "the most severely neglected dog" in the organization's history. Despite being under such threat, Valor is now in foster care, experiencing a recovery that holds a cautious tinge of optimism, as Special Pals grapples with an overstretched capacity due to a surge in intake, having received more than 130 animals in the previous month. With no government funding support, the shelter relies on community contributions to continue its life-saving work, which includes caring for dogs like Valor.
Currently displaying signs of improvement, Valor's condition remains critical, necessitating small meal portions to prevent complications and a suite of medical treatments including a medicated bath for his agitated skin and medications for an intestinal parasite. Echoing the shelter's commitment to recovery, French stated in an interview obtained by the FOX 26 Houston, "He loves people and shows basic manners. His condition is so severe that we can’t even identify his breed, but he should weigh twice his current weight." It is currently projected that Valor will be fit for adoption within a month should his recovery proceed as hoped.
