Authorities in Bexar County conducted an operation that busted a human-smuggling ring on Thursday afternoon. The Bexar County Sheriff's Office disclosed that 26 migrants were found in a facility described as a "shack," with stifling temperatures reaching nearly triple digits, according to KENS 5. Sheriff Javier Salazar stated that the youngest among them is believed to be 18 years old, and eleven individuals had to be transported to local hospitals due to heat-related ailments.

The migrants, according to Salazar, were transported in a "false compartment" under a flatbed trailer on a metal grate, a journey lasting approximately three hours from the border city of Laredo. Salazar added, That trailer, you can be standing right up on it, and not know that thing contains 26 people. It drove by thousands of cars, easily, on that three-hour trip from the border. The sheriff's office also discovered several bulletproof vests, long rifles, and conditions indicative of dogfighting or cockfighting at the property, Salazar told KSAT.

In the chaotic scene, seven individuals, suspected to be part of the smuggling operation, were taken into custody. The investigation into the incident has the involvement of several agencies, including Homeland Security. Salazar pointed out the challenges in distinguishing between victims and perpetrators, stating, "It's quite common for coyotes to pass themselves off as victims."

A tragic incident in June 2022 saw 53 migrants perish in a sweltering semi-trailer in San Antonio. San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg expressed his gratitude towards the local first responders for their efforts during the operation, lamenting, "Our hearts ache for the victims of this operation." This statement was made in light of the Biden administration's unveiling of significant restrictions on migrants seeking asylum, as reported by KENS 5.

For those who have any information regarding smuggling operations, Sheriff Salazar has requested that they call the sheriff's office at 210-335-6000. Meanwhile, the incident is an ongoing investigation, with further developments to be expected.
