The store, located at 5347 W Loop 1604 N., Suite #105, is a new destination for those looking for Japanese-inspired home décor, stationary, and beauty products, among other items. According to a KSAT report, the turnout for the opening days was substantial, with many people arriving in the early hours before doors opened.
Some shoppers like Lorenzo P. were determined to find specific items, as reported by KSAT. "I showed up at like 4:45 this morning ready to go; nobody else was here, but I'm definitely very excited to see the picked-over scraps," he said, highlighting his quest for products that were sold out on Saturday. The store seems to cater to the demand of residents for unique, culturally diverse merchandise, with offerings that resonate particularly with individuals looking for "more of like 3rd kind of culture, kind of like Asian, Hawaii vibes," according to shopper Lilliana Santos.
The grand opening was accompanied by a promotional event, rewarding the first 100 customers who spent a minimum of $30 with an exclusive goodie bag. This initiative was a part of the weekend-long celebration to welcome San Antonio shoppers to the new Daiso location. Daiso's operating hours moving forward will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. John Clarke, Chief Development Officer for Daiso USA, expressed the company's strategy in response to the community's desire, "San Antonio-based Daiso customers have shown us through our online business and social media their desire for us to have more stores within the state, influencing our immediate growth strategy in this region," relayed in a statement obtained by KSAT.
Area Manager David Schelick expressed his satisfaction with the community's reception of the store. "The response was overwhelming. We love San Antonio. San Antonio came out to support. We are super excited. We are also going to be opening more locations in the San Antonio coming very soon," he told KSAT. Customers also shared candid tips and experiences from the event. Jenika Alvarado, who braved the long lines and the Texas heat, advised future attendees to come prepared: "Bring an umbrella, bring a fan, bring chairs like to be prepared ‘cause we weren’t and were almost close to death," she joked.
With Daiso's plans to expand further in the San Antonio area, the store's successful opening weekend indicates a sustained interest in the Japanese retailer's unique mix of products. The company operates 132 units across 7 states, with additional states slated for openings in 2024.
