Kennesaw police are conducting an investigation following the discovery of human skeletal remains in a wooded area on Monday. According to a report by FOX 5 Atlanta, a man picking berries stumbled across the remains near the 4000 block of George Busbee Parkway, near Shiloh Road NW, and alerted an employee who was performing an on-site inspection.
"There was no identifying documentation, not sure if it's a male or female, but it is an adult," Officer David Buchanan of the Kennesaw Police Department told FOX 5 Atlanta. The remains were reported to be in an advanced stage of decomposition, making it difficult for investigators to promptly identify any distinctive features.
Working in tandem with the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office, detectives are looking to ascertain the identity and the cause of death. With scant clues on the person's gender, height, or approximate age, authorities are not at liberty to link the remains to any missing persons reports in the area as of yet.
The startling find has elicited a wave of concern amongst locals. "That's somebody's family, somebody's child, maybe somebody's mom, you never know," Hason Smith, who works nearby, said in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta. Police are urging anyone to immediately come forward with any information that could potentially aid in the investigation.
The Kennesaw Police Department is actively soliciting assistance from the public. Individuals with pertinent information are encouraged to contact the Kennesaw Police Criminal Investigations Division at (770) 429-4533, as indicated in an announcement by Atlanta News First. As the investigation is ongoing, further updates will be provided as they become available.
