Coward, who has a history of felony convictions including carjacking and evading law enforcement, was implicated in the accidental shooting when he left a loaded, unsecured handgun in a vehicle with the young child and his mother, Emma Huver, who also pleaded guilty to related firearms charges.
Authorities recounted that the child suffered a fatal gunshot wound after Coward exited the vehicle at a Lansing gas station, leaving both the toddler and Huver inside, and it was during this time that the handgun discharged; Huver discovered the devastating scene when she noticed her child with a bloody wound and a gun on the ground after exiting the vehicle - while in hindsight, the tragedy appears as a cascade of neglect, bad decisions, and grim consequences leading to an irrevocable loss.
