The Los Angeles Sparks grappled with a major setback during their Tuesday night game as rookie sensation Cameron Brink suffered a severe injury, tearing her ACL, which will sideline her for an extended period, including the upcoming Paris Olympics. As reported by KGW, Brink had to be carried off the court during the first quarter of the 79-70 loss to the Connecticut Sun, a scenario that left the Sparks and fans deeply concerned.
The No. 2 draft pick played for less than four minutes, and, after sustaining the injury, she was visibly in excruciating pain that necessitated assistance from Sparks personnel to reach the locker room. The ripple effect of Brink's injury is significant, not only for the Sparks' immediate game strategy but also for her anticipated role in the Paris Olympics where she was to compete in the U.S. 3×3 basketball team. According to KOIN, a replacement will now have to be named for her on the Olympic squad.
Prior to her injury, Brink had been making impressive strides in her inaugural season, averaging 8.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and was tied for second-most blocks in the WNBA, sharing the stat with A'ja Wilson. Now, with the Los Angeles team sitting at a disheartening 4-11 record, the question hanging in the air is who will rise to fill the void left by the fallen star. "Injuries are part of the WNBA, unfortunately," said Sparks' head coach Curt Miller, according to an ESPN article. His past experience with injuries in the league has shaped a 'next person up' mentality which will undoubtedly be put to the test again.
The Sparks are now looking towards their upcoming games against the New York Liberty on Thursday and Saturday to regroup and adjust their lineup. Coach Miller's resilience in the face of adversity is echoed through his history with Connecticut Sun, "You just have to have the mentality of next person up and rally around it." But losing Brink, is not merely a matter of filling a position, it's about compensating for a promising athlete whose burgeoning career has been abruptly put on pause. The Sparks' next move, as the team searches for someone to step into Brink's sizable shoes, remains to be seen as the season progresses.
