The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has alerted residents in Maricopa County about an Ozone High Pollution Advisory in effect from Friday, June 28 through Sunday, June 30. The advisory warns of expected ozone levels that may surpass the federal health standard, ADEQ announced. Providing this information ahead of the weekend allows the public to make necessary adjustments to protect their health, especially for those most vulnerable to the respiratory effects of ozone pollution.

Ozone, a type of oxygen molecule that forms close to the ground when pollutants from vehicles and industrial activities react with sunlight, presents a heightened risk during the warmer months, according to ADEQ. Children, who play outside more frequently and whose lungs are still developing, along with adults with respiratory issues and the elderly, are particularly susceptible to the dangers of ground-level ozone. The ADEQ and Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD) suggest limiting outdoor activities while the advisory is active, especially for these sensitive groups.

To combat the rise in ozone levels, ADEQ, and the MCAQD have released a list of recommendations intended to reduce pollution, as detailed on Maricopa.gov. These include promoting remote work, using public transportation, avoiding drive-thrus, biking or walking when feasible, refueling vehicles after dark, and ensuring proper sealing of chemical containers. Individuals are also urged to refrain from using equipment like leaf blowers and opt for less polluting alternatives in day-to-day activities.

During the period of the High Pollution Advisory, there will also be specific restrictions in place. These include prohibitions on residential wood burning, and government employees and contractors are barred from operating leaf blowers. Additionally, off-road vehicle use is discouraged, actions intended to lessen the potential for ground-level ozone formation. Citizens are encouraged to visit the county's air quality website to learn more and to stay informed on how to reduce air pollution and protect community health.
