
After a diligent selection process and a unanimous city council vote, Interim Police Chief David Beam has been officially appointed as the Marietta Police Department's new chief, according to WSB-TV. Boasting a substantial 38-year tenure with the department, which he initiated in 1986, Beam stepped into the role after serving as the deputy chief since 1999, and now takes the reins permanently following his interim position.
Beam's extensive history within the Marietta Police Department includes multiple leadership roles and a tenure as an adjunct instructor of criminal justice at Kennesaw State University from January 2008 to May 2016; Besides, serving on the Marietta Pension Board from 1999 to 2006. His broad experience has earned the trust and confidence of city officials, with City Manager Bill Bruton Jr. expressing his belief in Beam's capabilities, "It is my belief that David will be an excellent Chief," Bruton said in a statement obtained by WSB-TV, recognizing Beam's comprehensive background as a decisive factor in his recommendation to the council.
The formal announcement of Beam's permanent appointment was shared by the FOX 5 Atlanta, highlighting Beam's vow to foster a continued tradition of excellence in the police force. "It is my distinct honor to have been appointed as Chief of Police of the Marietta Police Department," Beam told FOX 5 Atlanta. “I want to thank the City Manager, Mayor, and City Council for having confidence in me to lead the department."
Accentuating the professionalism and commitment of the Marietta Police Department under his leadership, Beam commended his team's attributes. "The City of Marietta is served by a diverse, well-trained, an intelligent, brave, dedicated, and loyal group of police officers and staff. They are true professionals and carry a servant’s heart," Beam emphasized, as reported by WSB-TV. He also assured his dedication to maintaining Marietta's reputation as a premiere and safe place to live, learn, work, and play. Beam was officially sworn in by Mayor Steve Tumlin following the council's conclusive vote.
