
A confrontation between Melvindale police and suspects in a stolen vehicle turned violent yesterday, leading to a 21-year-old man being shot by officers. The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. near Schaefer Road, just west of Interstate 75 in Melvindale, according to the Macomb Daily.
Attempting to investigate a suspicious car, which reported stolen in Macomb County had been, officers encountered a hostile move when the vehicle rammed a patrol car head-on. Michigan State Police state that one of the car's six occupants brandished a firearm, prompting the authorities to discharge their weapons. The injured man was subsequently taken to a hospital for surgery; meanwhile, arrested were four others, the Press and Guide reports.
Of the six individuals in the stolen vehicle, two were adults and three were juveniles; a sixth person remains at large. In the aftermath of the chaos, it was found that the suspects allegedly targeted a storage area for multiple vehicle break-ins, where Ford and GM store their autos. The investigation led by the Michigan State Police Second District Special Investigation Section is still ongoing. They took over at the request of Melvindale police, which is a standard procedure when a law enforcement officer-involved shooting occurs.
No police officers endured injuries throughout the shocking sequence of events.
