A somber shadow lingers on Pope Street in Highland Heights following the deadly shooting that took place inside a local grocery store this past Sunday. The Memphis Police Department received a distress call at approximately 11 a.m., and upon their arrival, officers discovered a male victim with a fatal gunshot wound inside the Pope Street Grocery Store. He was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by Action News 5.
Details surrounding the shooting are scarce, but witnesses at the scene revealed to WREG that, concealing guns under their arms, two teenagers allegedly ambushed and murdered the victim. The chaos that followed haunts the community, with a local resident lamenting to WREG, "I moved because of stuff like this. I got five girls and three boys and we hear gunshots every night, if not every other night." Reginald Banks, a former neighbor to the store, voiced his distress over the regularity of gun violence and the lack of resolution for these crimes.
The identity of the assailants remains unknown, but Memphis Police confirm the victim and the suspects were acquainted with each other. A connection that, according to one witness who spoke to WREG, indicates the gunmen had anticipated the victim's arrival at the store.
The grim reality of the shooting has echoed through the community, bringing grief and fear to the forefront. Someone who identified herself as Nikki, visibly shaken by the ordeal, shared with FOX13, "His mama and them broke down right there," describing the anguish that unfolded among the victim's loved ones. She also touched on the haunting routine this violence has become, "You’re supposed to be waking up going to church in the morning, having breakfast. Now you just waking up going to the store and dying in the store." The age of the victim remains unconfirmed, but it adds to a palpable atmosphere of insecurity among residents, some of whom have already decided to avoid the store in the future.
As the community grapples with this latest tragedy, MPD is urging anyone with information to step forward and contact Memphis CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH. The efforts to bring the suspects into custody continue as families and neighbors mourn in the wake of this senseless act..
