A Memphis court has rendered a verdict in the case of Darrell Peterson, who faced multiple charges including the murder of 55-year-old Patricia Bryant in a 2020 shooting incident. Peterson was found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony, and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, according to Action News 5.
The jury's decision comes after an incident that unfolded when a verbal altercation escalated into violence. Peterson, reported to have fired several shots during the dispute, also stands convicted of killing a bystander—Frayser's Patricia Bryant. Local Memphis details that Bryant was in her yard, holding her baby grandson, when she was fatally struck in the chest.
In the wake of the tragedy, Bryant's family expressed profound grief. "My baby died right here in my arms because of some stupid, crazy human being got a gun in his hand," James Bryant, Patricia’s husband, told Action News 5 after her death. Investigators linked the incident to a previous argument on Facebook, which had escalated rapidly, leading to the vandalism of a residence and the subsequent shooting.
Peterson's sentencing is set for July 1. In the meantime, he faces other legal troubles, with charges of aggravated assault pending in a separate case, as Local Memphis reports.
Other individuals implicated in the events leading to Bryant's death have also been charged—Peterson's sister, Bernautica McClure, and Debra Prettie face vandalism charges as indicated in a statement provided by Action News 5.
